The historic town of Morpeth on the Hunter River was first settled in 1821 by pioneering timber workers.

Because of its unique location, Morpeth soon became one of the most important and influential river ports to the young colony of New South Wales, with sailing and steam-powered paddle ships bringing great prosperity to the people of the Hunter region.

The first steam-powered ship to call at the bustling port of Morpeth was the supply ship 'Sophia Jane'.

Among the items in the ship's cargo were the original ingredients in 'Morpeth's Marvellous Elixer'.

Thus the early temperance movement of the colony was able to make credible and satisfying alternatives to alcohol.
